These documents bear the stamp of genuineness upon them as plainly as does the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians or the Second to the Corinthians. If the reader will only take them for what they profess to be-r-take them at their word - they will repay study as human documents, though they may not constitute any contribution to theology, or make any appeal to the intellect or to the aesthetic faculty.
The first thing to note about them is the fact that the literary criticism of their contents reveals nothing that is inconsistent with the supposition that they were written by a man who lived between a.d. 389 and a.d. 461, the dates of St. Patrick''s birth and death according to the most recent calculations.
