Excerpt from St. Augustine Under Three Flags: In Black and White
I am also very greatly indebted to Mr. John Masters, of this city, who was born here in 1806; in 1837, Mr. Masters was a Sergeant in the party under Gen''l Hernandez, who captured Osceola, and it is from his descriptions of the scene, from a photo of the locality kindly lent me by Mrs. Marcotte, Treasurer of the local Historical Society, and from portraits of the General and Osceola, thatl drew the etchings of this interesting episode. To Dr. De Witt Webb I wish to return my thanks for descriptions of the shell mound and the manner of its formation as well as a cut of it; for the use of the portraits and for much general and valuable information and courtesy.
That the work is still incomplete and has many blemishes I am well aware, but if it assists our guests and visitors to some understanding of the subject, and points out a number of places of historical interest, which otherwise they would probably remain ignorant of I shall be satisfied.
