Description
Excerpt from Sir David Wilkie and the Scots School of Painters
In the wider but still national view, Wilkie was one of the many remarkable men whose coming attested the eighteenth century awakening of Scottish intellect and taste. They came in clusters, and include both the most brilliant, the most able, and the most learned men and women Of Scottish birth, who reached distinction in well nigh every field of thought and endeavour. The roll is too long to call.
N 0 such constellation is passing from the waning nineteenth towards the dawning of the twentieth century, and the phenomenal quickening of pent-up energy a hundred years ago can only be dubiously accounted for by comparative political quietude under a stable Govern ment, and by the cryptic operation of the law of cycles. Concerning Fife, it is remarkable that within ten years of the death (1790) Of Adam Smith of Kirkcaldy, Lord Chancellor Campbell was born at Cupar, the Rev. Dr. Chalmers at Anstruther, and Wilkie at Cults.
