Siempre Fiel Isla before the unfortunate animosity between the people inhabiting it had developed into savageness; ere the pomp and pride of Spain had been humbled, and its fruitful lands devastated by the vengeance of its native born inhabitants; when all was fair and quaint and fascinating, with a glamour all its own, I found that this Pearl of the Ah tilles, cradled upon the calm waters of the Caribbean, clothed in the gorgeous verdure of the tropics, and fanned by soft southern breezes, extended a hospitable hand of greet ing to the stranger attracted hither, in search of new and foreign scenes.
