About This Edition
This English translation of Saint John Chrysostom's eight homilies Adversus
Judaeos (Against the Jews), preached in Antioch in 386-387 AD, is presented here in a public domain print with text retrieved from a version hosted on tertullian.org.
The translation originates from an anonymous older English rendering, first made available online via Fordham University's Medieval Sourcebook (uploaded by Paul Halsall around 1998, with additions through 2002). The translator's identity remains unknown, though it may related to a1967 Ph.D. dissertation by C. Mervyn Maxwell.
In 2010-2011, Roger Pearse (tertullian.org) incorporated a newly translated portion of Homily 2 (rediscovered in the 1990s by scholar Wendy Pradels in a Greek manuscript and previously missing from most editions).
This restores the full content of that sermon.
The text is otherwise unchanged from its earlier online form. This material is believed to be in the public domain—no modern copyright is claimed on the core translation.
Dive into a profound and scholarly exploration of early Christian theology and identity with 'Homilies Against the Jews' by Saint John Chrysostom. Delivered as a series of eight eloquent sermons in Antioch around 386-387 AD, this work by the renowned Church Father and Archbishop of Constantinople offers a detailed, evidence-based discussion of religious practices, biblical interpretations, and the distinctions between emerging Christian traditions and established customs of the era.
Crafted with masterful rhetorical skill and deep scriptural insight, Chrysostom draws on Pauline teachings, Septuagint references, and typological analysis to guide his audience toward a unified understanding of faith and observance.
