Description
Robert Fergusson was a famous 18th-century Scottish poet who lived in Edinburgh. He died in 1774 at the tragically young age of 24. After becoming friends with a young aristocrat, he became a popular member of the Cape Club, a place where its middle-class members drank and socialised. Fergusson enjoyed their company and became involved in various incidents with other members of the club as they navigated the narrow wynds of Edinburgh. Fergusson also had love affairs with two young women: one an aristocrat, the other an actress. His mental health deteriorated and consequently he was committed to a mental asylum where he died after a brief stay. This novel blends fact with fiction. Eighteenth-century Edinburgh is the backdrop to the story which utilises the physical and social environment in which Fergusson lived.
