Description
The book begins with a brief introduction of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. Hurll outlines Rembrandt's character as an artist while providing a snapshot of the time and place in which the great painter lived, including quick accounts of his artistic contemporaries. Following the brief introduction, the real substance of the book is the analysis of Rembrandt's work. Fifteen of the artist's works have been re-printed in black and white in this text, which the author herself acknowledges is a far less than ideal way to observe the work of a master. Jacob Wrestling with the Angel, The Rat Killer, The Good Samaritan, and The Portrait of Rembrandt are some of the more famous works included in this collection, presented alongside some lesser known works.
The analysis that accompanies each painting is insightful and greatly beneficial for those unaccustomed to formulating a deep analysis of a piece of art and Hurll writes in a concise style that is easy to understand. For those interested in Rembrandt's work but are lacking a background in fine arts, this book is an excellent companion to a deeper appreciation.
Rembrandt: A Collection of Fifteen Pictures and a Portrait of the Painter is an excellent work that should delight not only the art buff but also the budding enthusiast.
