Description

In the spring of 1534 Jacques Cartier left Saint-Malo with two ships and sixty-one men. He coasted Newfoundland, entered the gulf, raised a cross at Gaspe and sailed home with two sons of the chief Donnacona. His narrative long circulated only in Italian and English versions before the French text was found again: this is the text Michelant and Rame print here, together with unpublished documents from the archives — deeds, accounts, papers in the navigator's own hand. The voice is not one that reaches for effect. Soundings, winds, shorelines, and astonishment at a country no European had yet described.
