Description

The Compañía de María existed to teach girls, which in the eighteenth-century Spanish empire made it something close to a public institution. This is the convent's account of its own foundation in Mexico City: the negotiations, the benefactors, the obstacles, the day the doors opened. Institutional histories of this kind were printed to secure a reputation and a memory, and they preserve exactly what the institution wanted preserved — which is itself the historical evidence. For the history of women's education in New Spain there is very little else. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1793 México edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
