Description

The Réflexions Critiques Sur La Poësie Et Sur La Peinture are a book art theory to theory of literature and music theory of Jean-Baptiste Dubos published for the first time in 1719 and often reprinted since.Taking as epigraph the half-line of Horace , Ut picture poesis , the Critical reflections on poetry and painting a turning point in the aesthetic thought, and exercised considerable influence on the development of theatrical art and music at along the Enlightenment . Abbé Dubos affirms that art can not only be beautiful, but must also stir hearts: ' We deserve the name of poet by making the action we treat capable of moving ' ( i , 24). ), or : ' The sublime of poetry and painting is to touch and please, as that of eloquence is to persuade. It is not enough for our verses to be beautiful, says Horace in the style of legislator, to give more weight to the decision; these verses must be able to stir hearts and to be able to give rise to the feelings they claim to excite. ( ii , 1) This 'stirring of hearts' or, more simply, 'sensibility', the experience of the senses giving rise to feeling, becomes an aesthetic principle in its own right. Dubos thus became a founder of the sensibility , at a time of taking distance and criticism vis-à-vis the Cartesian rationalism . A generation later, Jean-Jacques Rousseau will resume, to radicalize, these positions. The Critical Reflections on Poetry and Painting address issues that were little studied in his time: the nature of aesthetic enjoyment, the different condition of the different arts and their respective power, the role that physical causes may have in development. genius, in the character of works and in the literary brilliance of certain epochs, the art of judging in aesthetic matters and the competence of criticism. He blames in painting the enigmatic representation of thought in the form of allegory and attributes to poetry alone the privilege of the sublime. On the other hand, drawing a parallel with Italian , Dubos concludes that French is not more suited to poetry than to music.Without being profound, the philosophy of the abbot Dubos in Critical Reflections on poetry and painting is not without originality. Voltaire wrote in his Century of Louis XIV : ' All artists read it with fruit. It is the most useful book ever written on these matters in any of the nations of Europe. What is good about this book is that there are few errors and many real, new and profound reflections. It is not a methodical book; but the author thinks, and makes think. He did not know the music; He had never been able to make verses, and did not have a painting; but he had read a lot, seen, heard and reflected.
