This modest volume was apart of the fruits of nearly twelve years of very laborious research. I say a part, for as I stated at the time, I designed it merely as the forerunner of a larger and more complete work, then in course of preparation. Indeed, so far had I advanced in the preparation of the com plete work, that the material necessary to it had nearly all been gathered, and it remained only to obtain a few additional data and to perform the mechanical part of arrangement and revi sion. I, therefore, confidently expected that a year or two of faithful application would bring my task to a successful issue.
