Description
Excerpt from Records of the Town of Smithtown, Long Island, N. Y: With Other Ancient Documents of Historic Value; Transcribed From the Originals in the Town Clerk''s Office; With Notes and Introduction
What was the real nature of his offence we do not know. It is very evident, however, that there was nothing of a criminal nature connected with it. His offence was sim ply what would now be called a very aggravated case Of contempt of Court. His whole career shows him to have been a man of most determined will, and of the greatest pertinacity of purpose; and it is quite possible that he may have disobeyed some order which he considered um reasonable, and may have used language towards the Court that was more emphatic than complimentary.
