Description
Excerpt from Protecting Sherman''s Lifeline: The Battles of Brices Cross Roads and Tupelo, 1864
When General Forrest was in West Tennessee in March and April, Sherman telegraphed Gen. Cadwal lader C. Washburn, the commander in Memphis, not to disturb the Confederate cavalryman, because he could do less harm by cavorting over the country there than elsewhere. Grant, however, could see that Forrest was recruiting his command while harassing and destroying isolated Union garrisons, and he directed Sherman to send enough troops to Memphis to chase Forrest back into Mississippi.
