Description
Description- It's the end of the fourth century, and the Romans are leaving Britannia. Philippa is fourteen and an orphan, living at Mount Temple, high on a bluff overlooking the River Trisantonis. The old scholarly priest Father Florian has been kind to her. But when he has to retire, Philippa realizes she is no longer safe there. She convinces Justinian, an Army recruiter, to enlist her.
Philippa undergoes the rigors of basic training at the Ares Mons training camp, after which she is assigned to the all-but-forgotten outpost of Vindavia Nova. There she becomes aide to the camp's colorful and charismatic general, Cassius Ambrosius, and she befriends his enigmatic intelligence agent Brian Magnus. Philippa learns about duty and sacrifice during her time with them. She also sees and hears some things that seem impossible. She wonders if she will ever discover the truth, and also, if she will ever achieve her dream of traveling west to the Tin Kingdom of Dumnonia, and the shining castle over the sea.
Annotation- Inspired by the old myths and legends, The Mighty Land takes place in Britain at the end of the fourth century. The stories present the reader with the archetypal hero's quest, which involves overcoming obstacles, finding one's place in the world, and connecting with others. The reader shares the character's adventures as they learn about duty, tolerance, kindness, redemption, restoration, accountability, bravery, and self-awareness. An Tir Gallósek is inclusive fiction which embraces all communities, including LGBTQ and non-binary.
The Mighty Land is one epic tale, told across the three volumes, each with a different person's point of view. In Book One, it is the story of Philippa Agrippa (Pippa), an orphan girl of Romano-Celtic descent. It's the end of the Roman occupation, and the male population of has dwindled. That is the reason why Pippa takes on a role normally reserved for men, working at Mount Temple, in a remote part of southern Britannia. It is also the reason that she joins the army, after she is forced to flee from there. Pippa has to overcome many difficulties during basic training, but once she becomes a soldier, she is eager to serve. During her time in the Army, she finds companions who eventually become her new family. With them, she is able to head west by ship, in search of love and adventure.
The reader will encounter adventure, history, humour and philosophy. There are also some non-English words and phrases, including Latin, Cymraeg (Welsh), Kernowek (Cornish), Gaelic, Old Norse and Frisian, languages which influenced one another, and became part of common speech. These words are introduced in context, emphasizing the inherent connections between the various languages, and there is a glossary. The books also contain illustrations, in color and black and white, as well as maps and reference charts. All the artwork is by the author, as are most of the songs, some of which have been recorded.
The Mighty Land features animals: familiar pets as well as strange mythical creatures and a monster or two. Also there's weaponry, fashion, ships, maps, rivers, seas, hot tubs, cold pools, gardens, orchards, forests, fortresses, farms, castles, libraries, ice caves, crystal caverns, dodecahedrons, an impossibly high tower, and a great deal of food. Also, there are festivals, betrothals, weddings, babies, fashion shows, good songs, bad jokes, ancient technology, music, augury, and geomancy. The rich and detailed descriptions bring the stories to life.
