The name of Scotch Irish was first given in the seventh century to pioneers from Ireland who had established themselves on the western coast of Scotland, then called Caledonia.
Scottish clans, the Picts from the highlands and the Saxons of the lowlands, united to drive them from their shores, but in vain.
