Crystal fieid parameter on the basis of a molecular orbital treatment of the omplex made up of the reference ion and its nearest neighbors. They find a t parameter of correct sign and magnitude. Their chief improvement over Kleiner''e calculation is the careful treatment of exchange between the electrons on the reference ion and those eh the nearest neighbors.
