Description
A detailed history of Old Roundwood Colliery. Ossett, West Yorkshire throughout its existence from 1851 to its closure in 1966. This history includes information about the owners and illustrates what an important and profitable industry coal mining was at this period of time in history. There is also a detailed account of the battle to keep the pit open in the early 1960's including a description of some unconventional actions taken by management to make it appear the pit was more successful than it actually was.
The book is also about three generations of a Yorkshire family working at the pit. There are many anecdotes and also some pen pictures of some of the people who worked there over the years. The author worked there during the final five years the pit existed and relates many of his experiences. His father suffered a serious accident in 1956 and the poignant story about this and the fight to get compensation is included.
Overall this is a useful social history and should be of interest to anyone interested in 19th/20th century history and who likes good stories linked in to the narrative.
