As to documents, be obtained a fair number of originals and, wherever possession of originals could not be obtained, neat copies were made and preserved. He also collected old account books, sketches written long before his time, as well as a number of portraits and prints of interesting persons and places connected with his subject. Besides all these he kept several scrap books in which were preserved valuable newspaper clippings not now readily accessible.
Mr. Lyons' original plan was to group this material and to publish a work that would tell the story of the Jews from their earliest settlement in the United States down to his own day. His death in 1877 prevented the accomplishment of this pur pose and the material collected remained in the custody of his family, who for sentimental reasons would not permit of its use or disposal in any way.
