Description
The Sultan lost a battle at Ramla. In the desert, he found something worse.
Ramla, 1177. Salah ad-Din's army is broken by the Franks, and the Sultan flees south towards Egypt with a handful of survivors: his grieving nephew Taqi ad-Din, three mamluks of his guard and a young chancery scribe who rode out to write letters of victory.
In the waterless country beyond the frontier they find a Bedouin camp where every body has been drained white, and not a drop of blood remains in the sand. Something rides the desert after sunset on great Frankish horses. It knows their names. It calls to them in the voices of their dead.
The Turks of the steppe have a word for such things. To reach Egypt alive, the Sultan must hold his broken company together through the longest nights of his life, with steel, fire and the call to prayer, until the white thread of dawn.
Told decades later by the scribe who survived, OBUR is a historical horror novel of grief, faith and endurance, and the sealed account behind a single line in the chronicles: that on the road from Ramla, the Sultan vanished.
