Description
This book sets out to provide a detailed examination of Newhaven Fort during the Great War and to identify the men, as far as possible who served in the Fort, and to describe the activities taking place there. During the research it was soon found that the Fort was an integral part of Newhaven Garrison with thousands of servicemen from various units billeted in and around the town as well as inside the Fortress itself. It was necessary, therefore, to extend the scope of this book to identify and provide details about the other units and the activities of the Newhaven Garrison to best describe the role that Newhaven Fort played during the war, especially as part of the Garrison. Some answers to some intriguing scenarios arise as a result: Newhaven Fort, town and harbour were never attacked or invaded during the war. What if Newhaven had been subjected to a hostile attack or invasion? What kinds of attack were expected? How and by whom would any attack have been repulsed? The answers to these questions may be found in this book.
