Description
That errors have crept in goes without saying; that only a part of such manuscripts still preserved have come to the attention of the compiler is also unfortunately true. Many of the diaries listed seem to have but little value, but however insignificant they may contain facts saved by no one else and of great interest to a few. Others, like those of Judge Samuel Sewall and the Rev. Ebenezer Parkman, give nearly complete histories of the social life of the towns where the diarists lived.
By the term New England diaries, is meant those either kept by a resident of New England at home or abroad, or by the stranger who came to our shores and wrote his experiences and impressions.
