Excerpt from My Campaigns in America: A Journal Kept by Count William De Deux-Ponts, 1780-81
Reference to such notes, as well as to my own, is made by means of figures, to distinguish them from those of Count Wil liam, which are indicated by asterisks, etc.
There is internal evidence that the journal was written at the time of the events which it describes, though it was probably copied into the volume at a later period. From the fact that the date of one of the letters at the end of the volume (p. 157) is ih correctly given as 1783, it is not improbable that the copy was made at that time.
