Minerals that are plenty and precious being generally confined to fmall tracts of country and a''barren foil, are therefore remote from that publick obfervation which commerce and agriculture fo defervedly attraét: yet it is a matter of aflonifhment, that an objeét of the firfi national confequence, in point of time, fhould fo long remain, even to the prefent hour, a fecret limited to a few illiterate people. It is well known, that Tin and Lead were the fir?: and grandeit fiaples of great-britain, particularly the former, which introduced a trade and navigation before unknown to the difcoverers of our weftern coafis. This trade founded on Mining liill fubfifis, with many practical im provements and difcoveries and though corn and wool ''have contributed the largefi {hare of riches and population to thefe ?ouriihing kingdoms, yet that confideration ''does not by any means leifen the importance of the Mining interef''t. When we re?ect Upon the vail profufion of Silver, Tin, Copper, Lead, Iron, and Coal, yearly produced from the bowels 0 ''our Mines, which exceedingly furpaifes ourinternal confumfption, and there fore mull afford a very confiderable branch o commerce; we {hall find it difficult to account for that fupinenefs, which has hitherto declined the inveiligation of a fubjecft of Io much na tional importance.
