Fino al 1529 nessuna relazione passò fra il Duca di Fer rara e Michelangelo. In quell''anno la Signoria di Firenze aveva posto mano a fortificare la città per difendersi dalle armi pa pali e imperiali, che intendevano ridurla alla balia/dei Medici.« A governare quella impresa fu eletto il 6 aprile 1529 il Buo narroti, il quale attese sollecitamente a munire il poggio di S. Miniato che stà a cavaliere della città e donde poteva la medesima essere più facilmente battuta dagl'' inimici. Senonchè a, ridurre l''opera a maggiore perfezione, fu pigliata la deter minazione di_ spedire Michelangelo a Ferrara, nello scopo di esaminare le fortificazioni nuovamente erette dal Duca Alfonso, per giovarsene in quelle che doveva fare in Firenze.
