Le premier de tous, saint Augustin, en mêlant aux repentirs de l''homme les scrupules du casuiste,m''attendrissait ensemble et me faisait sourire. Admirable, mais plein de bassesses, le livre de Rousseau étonnait tous mes instincts. Dans les aveux de sa noble adepte, de cette femme d''une vertu antique, qui ne connut ni la peur ni le mensonge, j''aurais voulu effacer les pages trop semblables au maître.
