Ni los archivos señoriales de la casa de Gue vara, cuyo linaje tanto enorgullecía al maestro fray Antonio, ni los monásticos de la Orden franciscana a que perteneció, ni los episcopa *les de las diócesis de Guadix y Mondoñedo, que hubo de regir, nos han socorrido todavía con un documento cierto del lugar y año en que vió la luz primera don Antonio de Gue vara y de N o - roña. Mas sabiendo por boca suya que nació en Asturias de Santillana (1) y que se crió muy niño en Treceño, lugar de aquella merindad y del mayorazgo de Guevara no es una aventura conjeturar que fué Treceño su cuna y que fueron los aires montañeses, tan hechos a orear ingenios para nuestras letras.
