É bensi ''vero che questi terreni attualmente de'' pm ''ub''ertosi della Provincia ferrarese, furono anticamente valli e paludi, ma di mare nes suna indicazione trovasi nè vegetabile nè animale. E quando pure dal nome Porto si volesse derivarne la più certa etimologia, ne sembra dover ritenere che questo fosse un Porto su la così detta Fossa Caprasia anti camente scavata dagli Etruschi la quale sboccava direttamente in mare fra li due sbocchi del Santerno e della Fossa Sagi.
