The religious obligation resting upon Christian people of one generation to care for and endeavour to in?uence for good the next generation, and the generations that Will follow, was strongly felt by several of the good people referred to in these pages. Descending through a godly ancestry of many generations, this in?uential thought operated powerfully on the mind and heart of my late dear Wife; and, accordingly, she gathered up material respecting the families of Shrapnell, Dickenson, Bowden, and Newsom, with the view of a book being prepared to make known to succeeding generations the principles Which guided their ancestors, and made them burning and shining lights in their spheres of life. I fully sympathised With the original design, but, having other materials available besides, determined to enlarge the scope of the book, in order to furnish What many would like to possess in addition, an account of the Brigg family, Which is so closely allied to that of the Newsoms. It is With a sincere desire to glorify God, and benefit future generations, that these.
