Description
Luiz Augusto Rebello da Silva was a historian, a parliamentarian and a novelist, which in nineteenth-century Portugal was one occupation rather than three. This memoir of a political and literary life reflects that: the subject is measured by his speeches and his books together, and the standard applied is whether he served his country's understanding of itself. The genre is now unfashionable and the assumption behind it has not survived, which is what makes such a text useful — it shows what a public man was supposed to be, told by someone who was one.
