1. - To illustrate the form of the Turkish sword-hilt. This sabre is copied from specimen No. 845, U. S. Museum, Whitehall, and has the following legend attached to it Damascus Sabre, given by Yussuf Karaman Ali, Pasha of Tripoli, to Captain W. H. Smyth, kn., It is ?ame-shaped, as recommended by the author for ships' cutlasses, or other blades which are not worn in scabbards. This ?amboyant shape was common enough in the old straight long double-handed swords of the chivalric era.
