Mr. Stegg is a listener, as well as a talker; eager and greedy for gossip, he has heard much and forgotten nothing. Regarding certain things, he can be as close-mouthed as a sprung trap, and this known fact, as well as his sympathetic and genial nature, has made him the recipient of many con fidences, especially from the young of both sexes, concerning whom his interest is unfiagging and his curiosity insatiable. He religiously attends all the dances within a radius of sixty miles, and the withered, bald-headed, gray-bearded old reprobate can dance as well as any of the boys and better than most of them, not confining himself to squares, by any means. And, believe it or not, the girls like to dance with him. He has an ingratiating twinkle in his sharp old eye, a fatherly and benign manner and he knows how to say the things that girls like to hear even from old men. A ladies'' man, if you please! You may remember that I put the ladies first in my introduction.
