Volume Two contains the complete text of Marmion, an epic poem written by Scott and first published in 1808. The poem tells the story of the Battle of Flodden Field, which was a great battle fought between Scotland and England in 1513. Marmion is the story of the British Lord Marmion and his desires to be with a rich woman named Clara de Clare. Marmion is eventually killed in the Battle of Flodden Field and is never able to be with the woman he spends the poem pursuing. The story is told over the course of six cantos, and contains one of the most famous lines in in Scottish poetry: "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive!"
Marmion, while marking the second volume of this collection, is actually a great place to start when reading Scott's work. It is one of his most well-known and acclaimed works and offers the reader a fair representation of his style. Scott tells a detailed and entertaining story that is brought to life through his words.
