Description

Jose Ignacio Bartolache (1739-1790) was a Mexican physician, mathematician and mine assayer who in 1772 began the Mercurio Volante, the first periodical in the Americas devoted to science and medicine. He wrote to be understood, argued with the university, and spent his last years examining the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe with the methods of a physical scientist — which took some nerve. This manifesto, announced in the Gazeta de Mexico and printed in the year of his death, is the final statement of a man who believed that public reasoning was itself a medical instrument.
