Description
Collins' characters are well rounded and human, trying to make their way through a difficult world as best they can. The story can be considered a little slow to get moving by modern standards, but once it does it contains fantastic suspense and brilliant scenes, especially as it builds towards the surprising ending. The gender disparity in Victorian society is examined with a surprisingly almost-modern sensibility reminding us that stereotypes of the past are about as inaccurate as stereotypes about people in the present.
Recommended for fans of Collins, mysteries and Victoriana this novel is sure to entertain.
