Description
Lost in music, lost in dreams is the result of a special collaboration between photographer Gijsbert Hanekroot and musician/writer Robert Forster. Hanekroot was one of the most important rock photographers in the Netherlands from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. At concerts, interviews, and photo sessions he captured nearly all of the major names in rock, pop, soul, and blues. Forster founded The Go-Betweens in the 1980s, released nine solo albums, and has been writing music reviews for the Australian magazine The Monthly since 2005. In 2011 he published his book The 10 Rules of Rock And Roll.
For some time, Hanekroot had been considering creating a book combining photos with accompanying texts that would tell the stories of the 1970s. After reading The 10 Rules, he admired Forster’s writing style and approached him with the idea of a collaboration. Thus began the dialogue between two artists from different continents and generations. Forster, however, was not interested in writing a straight history of the decade, but instead penned texts in line with Hanekroot’s “eye” for detail and subject matter. He selected photos that spoke to him and wrote personal, poetic observations, which — combined with the accompanying images — form a chronicle of a musically important decade.
