Description
Veracruz held Totonac, Huastec, Nahuatl and Otomí speakers in close contact, and by the end of the nineteenth century the pressure of Spanish was already visible on all of them. This 1893 study sets down which languages were spoken where, with vocabularies and notes on their relations. Linguistic surveys of that period are now primary evidence: several of the varieties described have since contracted sharply or gone, and the record made by an observer who could still hear them is not reproducible. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1893 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
