As to the motives which induced the translators to do what they did, they are various none of them, of course, came forward because they were confident of their own ability, or because the thing had not already been done a great deal better than they could ever hope to do. Excuses of that kind occur in almost every preface. Caxton is an exception to this. In his very interesting preface to his translation of the French Aeneid romance he records his hesitation as to which style to choose, learned or popular.
