Description
The most difficult charge to take care of is the direct stroke. A direct stroke frequently splinters poles, so violent is the discharge to earth. The commoner charge met with is one induced from a charged cloud, and when the cloud discharges to earth, a free charge exists on the line, which immediately begins to travel in both directions with a velocity almost equal to that of light. Either of these forms of charges may expend their power ln traveling if they run a sufficient distance before encountering an obstruction.
