Pietro Martire Anghiera, plus connu sous les noms latins de Petrus Martyr Anglerius, naquit à Aroma sur le lac Majeur, le 2 février 1155, et mourut à Grenade, en Espagne, en 1526. Le hasard des circonstances le mit en rela tions avec les plus grands personnages de son temps. Successivement investi, soit en Italie, soit surtout en Espagne, de très importantes fonctions, chargé à diverses reprises de missions confidentielles, et très au courant de la poli tique contemporaine, ami de Colomb, de Gama, de Vespuce, de Cortés et de Magellan, ses oeuvres historiques et sa correspondance présentent une grande valeur.
