Description

Newell wrote for a particular reader — the picturesque tourist who travelled with a sketchbook. Each letter takes a stretch of Welsh country and marks out the views worth drawing, the station from which to take them, and the character of the scene, in the vocabulary of the picturesque that Gilpin had made fashionable a generation earlier. The plates were engraved by Thomas Sutherland. It is both a guide to Wales as the Regency saw it and a document of how landscape was taught to the amateur eye. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1821 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
