The intended recipient of these letters was Friederike Charlotte of Brandenburg-Schwedt and her younger sister Louise, all of which were written between 1760 and 1762. The letters were initially published as a result of the insistence of Catherine II who believed that they were treasures the general public deserved access to.
Since Euler was a mathematician, first and foremost, the letters often begin with basic explanations of size and mathematics.
