While the editor does not hold that in the first stages of foreign language instruction translation into English is a mistake, he believes that its use should be reduced to a minimum. In the case of a simple playlet such as La muela del Rey F arfa''n, translation into English may not be necessary at all. The foot notes give English translations that afford an immediate understanding of the difficult Spanish idioms. In some of these cases an explanation in Spanish would be long and complex. When the students have once understood the meaning of the Spanish idiom, even if it be at the expense of an English translation, they can use it in Spanish with out the need of translation.
