Description

« The social question » was the phrase nineteenth-century Europe used for everything it could not resolve about industry: wages, hours, the right to combine, what a factory owed the people inside it. Fernando de Anton wrote this in Seville in 1891, the year Leo XIII issued Rerum Novarum and Spanish anarchism was gathering in Andalusia. It is not a great book of theory. It is something scarcer — the argument as it was actually made in a provincial capital, by a man addressing neighbours who would recognise every example he gives. The presentation copy inscribed by the author survives in the scan.
