Description

The most common type of kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which accounts for the majority of cases. Other types include transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis and Wilms tumor, which primarily affects children. RCC itself has several subtypes, such as clear cell, papillary, and chromophobe, each with distinct biological behavior.

Risk factors for kidney cancer include smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and long-term dialysis. Occupational exposure to certain chemicals, such as trichloroethylene, may also contribute. Additionally, inherited genetic conditions like von Hippel-Lindau disease can significantly increase risk.

Early-stage kidney cancer often causes no symptoms, but when present, signs may include blood in the urine (hematuria), persistent pain in the side or lower back, a palpable mass in the abdomen, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and fever. Because these symptoms are nonspecific, diagnosis may occur at varying stages.

Diagnosis typically involves imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI to identify and characterize kidney masses. In many cases, a biopsy may be performed, although some tumors are diagnosed based on imaging features alone. Laboratory tests may help assess kidney function and overall health status before treatment.

Treatment depends on tumor size, stage, and patient health and may include surgical removal of part or all of the kidney (partial or radical nephrectomy). Minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic or robotic surgery are commonly used. For advanced disease, options include targeted therapy, immunotherapy, ablation techniques, or active surveillance in select cases.

Recent advances in targeted therapies and immune checkpoint inhibitors have significantly improved outcomes for patients with advanced kidney cancer. These treatments work by disrupting cancer cell growth pathways or enhancing the immune system’s ability to attack tumors. Ongoing research continues to refine combination therapies to improve survival and reduce side effects.

Living with kidney cancer involves both medical treatment and long-term monitoring of kidney function and overall health. Patients may require lifestyle adjustments, pain management, and emotional support during recovery or ongoing therapy. With early detection and modern treatment strategies, many individuals achieve long-term disease control and maintain good quality of life.
