Description
Excerpt from Jean-François Millet, Peasant and Painter
The day of Sensier''s funeral, it was decided among his family and friends that his manuscript, arranged and completed, should take the form of a volume. The manuscript was given to us in a not very good condition. Sensier told Millet''s life up to 1864, but for the following ten years had only put together documents and notes, with here and there, and only for a few episodes, a little editorial work; and even in the advanced parts were many imperfect pages, which the writer, interrupted by illness, had left for quieter days - days which never came. We have performed our work without changing the thought of the chief editor, but allowing ourselves to correct some historical mistakes. We have used all the author''s notes, and we can offer com plete, if not perfect, the manuscript which Sensier cared more for than for anything he had written, because it commemorated his dearest friend.
