Landschaftliche Reize bietet Palästina wenig. Die Berge zeigen keine malerischen Linien; Wald und Wiese gibt es nicht, außer am Karmel, in Galiläa, und namentlich auf den rauhen und wasserreichen Hohen Gileads; große wildwachsende Bäume kommen in der Regel nur einzeln vor, so daß sie als Landmarken dienen. Aber der Rebe, Olive und Feige sagt der Boden zu, die Palme kommt nur stellenweise vor Jene edelen Gewächse verstehn es, sich in dem Felsen einzuwurzeln und aus ihm ihre Süßigkeit zu saugen. Wo die Ackerkrume tief genug ist, da waehst Weizen und Gerste in Falle, am besten in der Hügelregion und in der Ebene.
