Description

The National Library of Mexico was decreed more than once before it existed; it finally opened on 2 April 1884, in the former church of San Agustín, under José María Vigil (1829-1909), who catalogued it and made it work. This volume records the inauguration — the addresses given, the account of what had been assembled, the sense of an occasion that was understood at the time as a statement about what kind of country Mexico intended to be. It carries an engraved view of the building. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1884 México edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
