Description
Excerpt from In Assembly, Vol. 71: February 19, 1879
Besides this growing tendency to adopt scientific rather than classical study, there has been a rapid multiplication of industrial schools and schools of technology, of late, in the leading countries of Europe, of which we shall have occasion to speak in another place. In general it does not appear that practical studies are held in any higher repute as a means of mental discipline and culture in Europe than in this country; but the disposition is too often apparent to train men for special branches of industry rather than to educate them for intelligent citizenship.
