Description
As a child, growing up in South-Eastern Norway, the vast country to the east with which we shared a short border in the far north, held an enormous fascination to me. All the more enticing because the border was closed to us. Nor could Russian people visit Norway. I soaked up everything I heard about it—the enormous flat plains, their melodic and alien songs, their literature and their colourful churches with a whiff of the Orient. But because of the Iron Curtain we could not go there. A few people had been and returned home with stories of being watched by secret police and forbidden to walk about freely.
Still, I wanted to see it, and one day, in a much-changed world, I did. This then is the story of my second visit to this fabled country—a dreamlike journey on the Trans-Siberian Express from Moscow to Beijing.
