Description

Aureliano Ibarra y Manzoni set out to prove that the Roman colony of Illici lay at La Alcudia, near Elche, and dug to show it. This volume is the result: topography, inscriptions, coins, and above all the mosaics, recorded in plates of great care because he understood that excavation destroys what it reveals. Eighteen years after publication, on land his family had acquired, a labourer struck the limestone bust now known as the Lady of Elche. Ibarra did not live to see it. His book remains the foundation of everything since written on the site, and the plates preserve pavements that no longer exist.
